The Nefertiti Lift is based on the beautiful Egyptian royal wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten, Nefertiti, who lived from 1370 to 1330 B.C. The graceful queen is often depicted with an elevated neck and chin held high, exposing smooth, ageless skin and distinct and elegant jawline 2 . With the correct placement of Botulinum Toxin also referred to as Neurotoxins,,the look can be achieved and ultimately create a “mini lift” while smoothing neck lines.
What is Botulinum Toxin?
Bo-tox is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and related species. It prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings in the neuromuscular junction and thus causing flaccid paralysis. Without this signal, the muscle fails to contract. Several brands exist on the market today. Those brands include Botox Cosmetic®, manufactured by Allergan, Dysport® produced by Galderma and Xeomin® by Merz Aesthetics 3.
Bo-Tox is now used extensively for the rejuvenation of the forehead, glabellar and periocular regions. After a quick approval from the Food and Drug Administration in the year 1989, it wasn’t long until the applications had endless opportunities and its indications expanded. Once used only for ocular dystonias, Botulinum Toxin is now used for numerous reasons both medicinal and cosmetic 1.
How the Nefertiti Lift Works
During a span of five to fifteen minutes, a provider will inject Botox along several areas of the lower jaw and neck. The injections on the neck are focused on the platysma muscle (illustrated below) which service to pull the jaw muscles forward (Vieira, 2019). The objective of the injections is to relax this platysma muscle. With age, the depressor muscles of the face, which cause the lower face to droop, become more active. By decreasing this depression activity, we allow our facial elevator muscles to be more active resulting in a more lifted and defined jawline 4.
How Much Does it Cost?
As a general rule of thumb, the cost per band is $150-200 depending on the size. This is an extremely delicate area that requires advanced training and takes more time than most other neutoxin injected areas of the body.
Are You a Good Candidate?
While the results of injecting Botox into any area range from patient to patient, the ideal candidates for the Nefertiti lift should meet several criteria for the best possible results.
- Younger patients who want to prevent the platysma muscle from becoming overactive
- Older patients who have high depressor muscle activity
- Patients with a normal weight
- Patient with mild skin laxity
- No excessive fat along the jawline
- Loose or folding skin below the chin or jawline
- Mild to severe jowls that hang below the jawline
It is important to remember that this procedure does not treat the fatty areas of the jaw and neck, nor does it tighten extremely loose skin. It is a providers job to determine if the patients existing jawline and platysma muscle contractions are suitable for this treatment 3
Results and Treatment Frequency
While some patients notice results immediately after treatment, full results typically heighten after several days. Like any aesthetic procedure, effects range depending on the patient. In general, we can expect results to last anywhere from three to five months. In order to sustain the look of a smooth neck, it is recommended to undergo the procedure several times a year. 3
